Al-Mustaqba Energy Research Center at Al-Mustaqbal University, in collaboration with the Power Mechanics Department, organized an interactive scientific workshop focused on the recycling of lithium batteries, with the attendance of the Center Director Dr Salwan Obaied Waheed , Dr. Mohammed Maytham, and a group of university students. The workshop was held as part of the center’s ongoing efforts to promote applied research and raise awareness of sustainable energy and environmental practices. The workshop aimed to introduce participants to the scientific principles and practical techniques involved in recycling end-of-life lithium batteries, which play a vital role in renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, and modern energy storage applications. Given the environmental and safety challenges associated with improper disposal of such batteries, the workshop emphasized safe, efficient, and sustainable recycling methods. A key feature of the workshop was its comprehensive hands-on approach. Participants successfully carried out the disassembly of lithium battery cells into their primary components, applying appropriate laboratory tools and safety procedures. The process resulted in the recovery of aluminum and copper sheets, as well as carbon and lithium particles, accompanied by detailed explanations of the properties of each material and their potential reuse in research and industrial applications. In addition, the workshop included scientific discussions on current challenges in lithium battery recycling technologies, future development opportunities, and the role of recycling in supporting the principles of the circular economy and reducing hazardous waste. The organizers highlighted the importance of involving students in practical scientific activities to enhance their technical skills, strengthen their research capabilities, and bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications. This workshop is part of a series of scientific and educational activities conducted by the Future Center for Renewable Energy Research, reflecting its commitment to advancing applied research, strengthening collaboration with academic departments, and contributing to sustainable energy solutions in line with the vision of Al-Mustaqbal University.
