The healthcare field has witnessed a radical transformation in recent years due to the integration of digital technologies and artificial intelligence into academic and clinical environments. Among the medical fields impacted by AI is performance assessment, where AI is playing an increasingly important role in accurately and rapidly measuring and evaluating nursing skills. This positively impacts the quality of training and educational outcomes, which are fundamental pillars of healthcare.
The systems used in assessment are computer-based systems capable of analyzing diverse data such as audio, text, videos, and clinical simulations to provide automated and accurate assessments of student or trainee nurse performance. These models rely on technologies including deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), and computer vision. Some of these applications include:
Virtual simulation applications, which analyze student performance while handling virtual clinical scenarios, recording responses, dosage errors, and procedure timing.
Applications for analyzing communication with patients, which analyze body language, tone of voice, terminology, and measure rapport, emotional support, and adherence to professional ethics. Applications for assessing procedural skills, such as tracking movement during tasks like administering injections or inserting catheters, allow for comparison of performance against standard benchmarks.
Applications for analyzing student learning records identify individual student weaknesses and propose customized learning plans.
Applications for monitoring staff professional development use the results of intelligent assessments to determine ongoing training needs. All these applications, and more, offer educational and practical benefits, including greater accuracy and objectivity in assessment, time and effort savings, immediate feedback, personalized training, and improved quality of nursing staff output, directly impacting patient safety and the efficiency of care provided.
Finally, the use of artificial intelligence models represents a qualitative leap in nursing education and healthcare training. It enables institutions to provide fair and objective assessments, supports students in their learning journey, and enhances nurses' readiness to handle the challenges of clinical practice. As technology continues to advance, artificial intelligence will become an indispensable element in building more efficient and innovative healthcare education systems, ultimately improving the quality of care provided to the community.
