Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Education, Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Rodhan Salman, the Head of the Women’s Affairs Unit at the College, Prof. Dr. Thanaa Bahaa Al-Din Abdullah, organized an awareness lecture entitled: “Women and Legal Affairs” on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., at the Psychological Counseling Unit headquarters in the College. The lecture featured the participation of Asst. Lect. Jaafar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, who presented a key theme on the role of women in society. The event was attended by the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Assist. Prof. Ahmed Ali Al-Jundi, along with a number of faculty members from various departments of the College, who actively contributed to the discussion. The lecture addressed the significance of law, which touches every aspect of life — from marriage contracts we sign, to the work we perform, and even inheritance rights guaranteed by law and Islamic Sharia. Given the importance of law, how can women — who represent half of society — be excluded from participation in it? Women have the right to participate in legal affairs not merely as recipients of services, but as key actors in drafting and implementing laws. This right is not a modern privilege; rather, it is a deeply rooted and fundamental right throughout history. 1. Islam honors both men and women and grants women full individual responsibility and legal personality. Numerous Quranic verses affirm that women possess independent legal identity and free will. 2. Laws are enacted to regulate the lives of all people. For laws to be just and fair, they must reflect the needs and experiences of all members of society. Women’s participation ensures that legislation does not overlook the needs of half the population. 3. Societal progress requires all minds and expertise; therefore, it is unreasonable to deprive society of half its intellectual and professional capacities in a vital field such as law. Women’s participation in legal affairs takes many forms, including: 1. As legislators. 2. As judges. 3. As lawyers. 4. As legal consultants. 5. As legal awareness advocates. However, several challenges hinder women’s effective participation in legal affairs, including: • Social customs and traditions. • Lack of role models and encouragement. • Difficulty balancing professional and family life. • Professional discrimination. To enhance women’s role in legal affairs, coordinated efforts are required: 1. At the family level. 2. At the level of educational institutions. 3. At the level of civil society and media. 4. At the legislative and judicial levels. In conclusion, women’s right to participate in legal affairs is an integral part of their human dignity and a fundamental necessity for building a just and balanced society. This right is not a competition with men, but rather a genuine partnership. Women’s presence in the legal profession enriches judicial processes, promotes fairer legislation, and strengthens public trust in legal institutions. Let us all work together to remove the obstacles that hinder women’s effective participation and believe that building a society founded on justice and equality can only be achieved through the combined efforts of both men and women, within the framework of Islamic Sharia and the law. This activity was part of the implementation plan of the Iraqi National Strategy for Women 2026, Axis Three, Paragraph Two. It also contributes to achieving the fourth Sustainable Development Goal: Quality Education. #College_of_Education #Al_Mustaqbal_University
