Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Education, Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Rodhan Salman, the Women’s Affairs Unit at the college, under the supervision of the Head of the Unit Prof. Dr. Thanaa Bahaa Al-Din Abdullah, organized an awareness workshop on domestic violence and its impact on children and society. The workshop was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Saja Zuhair Hamed, a member of the Women’s Affairs Committee in the Department of English Education. It was held on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. in the Psychological Counseling Room at the college, with the attendance of a number of faculty members and administrative staff.
The workshop addressed the serious consequences of domestic violence, emphasizing that its effects do not stop at the boundaries of the home but extend to influence the structure and stability of society. It explained that children who grow up in environments where violence is seen as a means of communication or control are more likely to adopt similar behaviors later in life, which may lead to the reproduction of violent patterns across generations.
The workshop also highlighted that domestic violence weakens trust within the family, which represents the fundamental nucleus of society. Such instability may push children to seek belonging outside the home, sometimes in unhealthy environments that may exploit their feelings of anger or frustration.
Furthermore, the workshop discussed the social and economic costs of domestic violence, noting that the spread of this phenomenon negatively affects societal stability, contributes to rising crime rates, and places increasing pressure on social care institutions, legal systems, and mental health services.
The workshop concluded by emphasizing that domestic violence is not merely a private family matter, but a societal challenge that requires awareness and collective efforts to address, given its direct impact on the future of social stability and peace.
This activity falls within the implementation plan of the Iraqi National Strategy for Women 2026 (Axis Three / Paragraph Three) and contributes to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education.
