On Thursday, March 26, 2026, the College of Law at Al-Mustaqbal University organized an online workshop via Google Meet titled “The Role of Environmental Legislation in Supporting Renewable Energy (Iraq as a Case Study),” moderated by Ammar Youssef Khudair. The workshop highlighted the importance of enacting environmental legislation to promote the transition to renewable energy sources, its role in protecting the environment and reducing dependence on traditional energy sources, as well as addressing environmental challenges such as pollution, climate change, and the depletion of natural resources. The workshop analyzed the current state of environmental laws in Iraq, focusing on the Law on the Protection and Improvement of the Environment No. (27) of 2009 and the mechanisms it contains to reduce harmful emissions and encourage the use of clean technologies, as well as the Iraqi government’s efforts to support solar and wind energy projects by streamlining procedures and granting investment licenses. The workshop highlighted the multifaceted dimensions of these laws, including reducing environmental impacts, encouraging investment in clean energy, promoting sustainable development, and supporting Iraq’s international commitments on environmental issues. Attendees also discussed the most significant challenges hindering the effectiveness of environmental legislation, such as weak enforcement, a lack of financial incentives, and the absence of a comprehensive legal framework for renewable energy, while emphasizing the need to develop an integrated legislative system to keep pace with developments. The workshop saw active engagement from participants, who enriched the discussion with their contributions and questions, stressing the importance of continuing such academic events to enhance legal and environmental awareness. This workshop is part of a series of academic activities organized by the College of Law at Al-Mustaqbal University to support scientific research and strengthen the role of legislation in achieving sustainable development.
