Under the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, the Sustainable Development Division at Al-Mustaqbal University organized the forum “Al-Mustaqbal Water Conservation Week”, as part of the University’s efforts to raise awareness of the importance of water resources and to consolidate the principles of sustainable development, particularly in light of accelerating environmental challenges. In a speech delivered on behalf of the University Presidency, Professor Dr. Mudhafar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, Director of Scientific and Academic Supervision, affirmed that water represents the lifeblood and one of the most prominent strategic challenges facing the world today. He pointed out that Iraq is considered one of the countries most affected by climate change, accompanied by increasing water scarcity and growing pressure on water resources as a result of industrial, agricultural, and commercial activities, in addition to municipal activities. Al-Zuhairi emphasized that these challenges impose a greater responsibility on universities and academic institutions to play an active role in providing scientific and research-based solutions to address water pollution, improve the efficiency of water resource management, and raise community awareness of the importance of water conservation and rational consumption as a foundation for development and stability. The forum witnessed the participation of the Director of the Water Resources Directorate in Babil Governorate, who delivered a presentation addressing the reality of the water sector in Iraq in general and Babil Governorate in particular. He highlighted the most significant current challenges in light of global climate change and reviewed a number of proposed solutions and measures to ensure the sustainability of water resources. Engineer Khalid Kazim Al-Salihi, Head of the Sustainable Development Division at Al-Mustaqbal University, also delivered a lecture addressing the water policy adopted by the University, which aims to rationalize water consumption through the use of smart sensors to monitor usage by students, staff, and faculty members. The policy further includes recycling greywater and using it to irrigate green areas within the university campus, in addition to applying modern technologies in irrigation systems. Al-Salihi confirmed that the University is working to integrate water conservation concepts into academic curricula and scientific research, as well as to implement voluntary and community campaigns that contribute to consolidating a culture of rational water consumption and enhancing environmental awareness within society. This forum comes as part of a series of activities implemented by Al-Mustaqbal University in support of national efforts to confront environmental challenges, and as a reflection of its scientific and societal role in achieving sustainability and protecting natural resources for future generation
