M.Sc. Haider Mutlak Mousa from the Department of Biochemistry conducted an awareness campaign titled "Depression: A Disease, Not a Weakness", with the participation of lecturers M.Sc. Abbas Hamza Khudair and M.Sc. Estabraq Aref Muhammad, attended by a number of college students. The campaign is part of the academic and awareness activities aimed at promoting mental health among members of the university community. The campaign addressed the importance of recognizing depression as a mental illness that requires support and professional treatment, rather than a personal weakness, explaining common symptoms of depression, its psychological, social, and biological causes, and how it can be properly diagnosed. It also covered scientific methods for supporting patients, the role of family, peers, and colleagues in providing psychological support, and the importance of early intervention to prevent physical and psychological complications. During the campaign, participants were provided with practical advice to enhance mental health, such as engaging in physical activity, practicing relaxation techniques, and seeking help from mental health professionals or doctors when needed, emphasizing that mental health is an integral part of overall health, and asking for support does not indicate personal weakness. The organizers emphasized the role of the college and academic staff in creating a psychologically supportive learning environment, encouraging students to open up and discuss their mental health issues without fear or shame, stressing that raising awareness about these issues strengthens students’ ability to cope with academic and social pressures and improves overall university life quality. This campaign is part of a series of awareness activities organized by the college to promote mental health awareness, reduce the stigma of depression, and encourage a culture of support and solidarity among all members of the university community.
