As part of the distinguished scientific activities at the College of Arts and Human Sciences at Al-Mustaqbal University, Asst. Lect. Rusul Neima Kamal conducted a specialized scientific study titled "Insomnia as a Sleep Disorder: Causes, Risk Factors, and Contemporary Treatment Approaches". The study explored insomnia as a condition characterized by disruptions in how an individual feels or functions due to poor sleep quality or insufficient sleep duration, noting that approximately 10% of the world's population suffers from insomnia as a diagnosed medical condition. The study reviewed several clinical symptoms of insomnia, including difficulty falling asleep, waking up during the night, and waking up too early without being able to return to sleep. It also highlighted the daytime consequences, such as feeling unwell, delayed responses, memory issues, and mood changes like anxiety or irritability. The researcher attributed the causes of this disorder to a combination of factors, including genetics, differences in brain chemistry, medical conditions, and hormonal changes, in addition to stressful life circumstances and irregular sleep habits.Furthermore, the study warned of the serious complications of long-term sleep deprivation, which can increase the risk of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and obesity. Regarding treatment, the research emphasized that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line and most effective treatment. CBT-I aims to identify and address the behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that sustain sleep disruptions through strategies like sleep hygiene, stimulus control, and cognitive therapy to create a comfortable environment conducive to rest. This scientific contribution reaffirms Al-Mustaqbal University's commitment to providing rigorous research that addresses contemporary health and social issues, further enhancing its prestigious academic standing.
