The College of Medicine at Al-Mustaqbal University organized a specialized scientific seminar titled “Mental Health in the Digital Age” as part of the first day of the “Fourth Al-Mustaqbal International Sustainability Week.” The event was held under the patronage of the University President, Hassan Shaker Majdi, and attended by the Dean of the College, Walaa Luay Al-Falluji, along with a distinguished group of faculty members, physicians, and researchers. This initiative reflects the college’s commitment to addressing the health challenges posed by modern technology on individuals and society. The seminar embodied the college’s belief that sustainability cannot be achieved without both physical and mental well-being. It emphasized that integrating technology into daily life must be accompanied by comprehensive medical awareness on how to protect the human mind from the negative effects of excessive digital exposure, ultimately contributing to the development of a medical roadmap for addressing the challenges of the digital age. The seminar aimed to highlight the physiological and psychological impacts associated with excessive use of digital technologies, while promoting awareness of the concept of human sustainability, which begins with mental well-being. This contributes to building a conscious generation capable of using technology responsibly. The session was delivered by Dr. Alaa Baqir, who covered several key scientific topics, including the neurological effects of prolonged screen exposure and continuous information flow on brain chemistry and concentration levels. He also discussed the diagnosis of contemporary psychological disorders such as anxiety linked to the virtual world and the phenomenon of “digital burnout,” in addition to outlining medical and psychological prevention strategies to mitigate the negative effects of social media on adolescents and young adults. Participants from the College of Medicine emphasized that the integration of technology in healthcare must be accompanied by a strong awareness of protecting the human mind from excessive digital use, highlighting the importance of joint academic and medical efforts in addressing these growing challenges. The Dean of the College affirmed that participation in this international week reflects the college’s commitment to delivering scientific content that enriches discussions on sustainability in its human and health dimensions, and reinforces the role of medical institutions in building a sustainable and balanced society.
