The profession of graphic design is relatively modern in terms of its formation, activities, and goals. While there is no consensus on a specific date marking the emergence of graphic design, some trace its origins to the period between the two world wars, while others argue that it began to be recognized as such by the late 19th century.

It can be said that graphic communications with specific purposes have their roots in cave drawings from the Paleolithic era and the birth of written language in the third millennium BC. However, the differences in working methods, supporting sciences, and required training make it impossible to clearly identify the current graphic designer with prehistoric humans, 15th-century woodworkers, or the lithographic printers of 1890.

Graphic design is a form of communication that uses colors, shapes, images, and words to create visual content that surrounds us in various forms — including both print and digital media. Effective designs convey information that inspires and educates consumers, making them essential for the success of any business.

Graphic design is a profession, academic discipline, and applied art that involves presenting visual communications aimed at conveying specific messages to social groups for particular purposes. It is an interdisciplinary branch of design and fine arts. Its practice involves creativity, innovation, and lateral thinking using both manual and digital tools. Text and graphics are commonly used to communicate visually.

The role of a graphic designer in the communication process is to encode or interpret the message. They work on interpreting, organizing, and presenting visual messages. Graphic design typically utilizes the aesthetics of typography and the structural arrangement of text, ornamentation, and images to communicate ideas, emotions, and attitudes that go beyond what language alone can express. The design work may be based on a client's request, which ultimately results in a visual creation, either written or oral. In essence, graphic design transforms a linguistic message into a graphic appearance.

Graphic design, as an application field, encompasses various areas of knowledge that focus on any visual communication system. For example, it can be applied in advertising strategies, or even in the fields of aviation or space exploration. In this sense, in some countries, graphic design is only associated with the production of illustrations and drawings, which is incorrect, as visual communication is a small part of a vast range of types and categories where it can be applied.

With origins in ancient and medieval times, graphic design as an applied art was initially linked to the boom of printing in Europe in the 15th century and the rise of consumer culture during the Industrial Revolution. From there, it emerged as a distinct profession in the West, closely tied to advertising in the 19th century, and its development paved the way for its establishment in the 20th century. Given the rapid growth in information exchange today, the demand for skilled designers has never been greater, especially due to the development of new technologies and the need to address human factors beyond the efficiency of the engineers who develop them.

Throughout the 20th century, the technology available to designers continued to advance rapidly, as did the artistic and commercial possibilities of design. The profession grew significantly, with graphic designers creating, among other things, magazine pages, book covers, posters, CD covers, postage stamps, packaging, branding, signage, advertisements, motion graphics for television and films, and websites. By the early 21st century, graphic design had become a global profession, with technology and advanced industries spreading worldwide.

Sustainability in Graphic Design
In recent decades, graphic design has become a crucial element in the environmental sustainability movement. Designers play a significant role in influencing consumer behavior through designs that promote environmentally conscious practices. For example, graphic design can help raise awareness about issues such as climate change, resource management, and the shift toward using recyclable products. Furthermore, the use of eco-friendly materials in printing and packaging has become a core principle for many graphic designers today.

Graphic design in the modern era now goes beyond conveying artistic or commercial messages; it also plays a vital role in promoting environmental and social.

Almustaqbal University, The First University in Iraq
