"Safaa Al-Zaman (Purity of time)" is a painting that reflects a scene blending nature with urbanization in an impressionistic-abstract style. The artwork merges natural elements (palm trees, water, and traditional architecture), utilizing bold colors and broad brushstrokes along with a palette knife. This technique conveys a sense of movement and vitality, drawing the viewer into the depth of the scene and its intricate details.

The composition is structured into three main areas:-
The Left Side: Dominated by palm trees, a natural element that evokes a sense of life and connection to the environment.
The Right Side: Featuring traditional buildings, part of an old village, representing architectural heritage and history.
The Foreground and Center: Occupied by a flowing water passage that links nature with urbanization, creating a sense of movement and continuity.
Color and Lighting Relationship
The clear blue sky provides a feeling of openness and vastness. The dominance of blue, especially in the water, enhances a sense of freshness, while the earthy brown and orange tones reflect the dry, rural landscape. The palm trees are painted with a blend of green and brown hues, reinforcing realism and making the scene more lifelike. (Semender) masterfully captures the impression of reality through his color choices.
The artist introduces dynamism into the work by utilizing movement, visual depth, and prominent lines with color gradations. The flowing water and its motion create a dynamic element within the painting. The variation in the size of elements, such as trees and buildings, enhances the sense of perspective and depth. Additionally, the use of diverse palette knife strokes—both sharp and soft—adds a changing visual rhythm, guiding the viewer’s eye smoothly across the composition.
Symbolic and Philosophical Implications
The painting conveys an interaction between nature (palm trees, water) and urbanization (buildings), symbolizing the harmonious coexistence of humans and their environment, as well as the passage of time and the impact of development on natural landscapes.
Furthermore, the depiction of water as a life-giving force flowing through a dry, warm-colored land signifies renewal and the persistence of life despite nature’s harshness. Through an expressive and impressionistic approach, the artist employs bold colors and pronounced palette knife strokes, adding emotional depth to the piece. Rather than a purely realistic representation, the work carries multiple layers of emotion and interpretation, depending on the viewer’s perspective.
This painting serves as a remarkable example of the fusion between abstraction and impressionism. The artist successfully conveys a sense of life and nature through his daring color choices, free-flowing strokes, and expansive visual perspective. The directorial vision of the piece highlights the relationship between humanity and the environment, utilizing visual elements to guide the viewer’s eye seamlessly and dynamically through the scene.

The above article contributes significantly to achieving Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals, "Quality Education," as it reflects the importance of education in empowering individuals and communities toward a better future.

Almustaqbal University, The First University in Iraq
