With increasing population and economic pressures, social housing projects have become a vital solution to provide decent homes for low-income communities. However, the key challenge lies not just in housing provision, but in ensuring high and sustainable quality of life. Here, sustainable design systems emerge as a cornerstone for enhancing living environments, reducing environmental impact, and cutting operational costs.
Features of Sustainable Design in Social Housing:
Utilizing natural energy: By orienting buildings to maximize natural light and ventilation, thus reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning.
Eco-friendly building materials: Using recycled or locally sourced materials to minimize the carbon footprint.
Green and open space planning: Promotes physical and mental well-being while fostering a sense of community.
Energy and water efficiency: Through insulation systems, solar panels, and water-saving fixtures.
The Impact on Quality of Life:
Sustainable design enhances not only the built environment, but also resident satisfaction, public health, and community cohesion. It also reduces monthly living costs through lower utility bills, making it an economic as well as environmental win.
Achieved Sustainable Development Goal:
This approach contributes to SDG 11: "Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable" by ensuring eco-friendly, livable housing for vulnerable communities.

Al-Mustaqbal University the first university of Iraq .
