Artificial intelligence has revolutionized the process of drug development by accelerating the stages of research and discovery. These systems can analyze chemical compounds and compare them with millions of previous formulations, helping to identify the most effective substances against a specific disease in a short time. This not only reduces the costs of lengthy research that used to take years but also paves the way for producing more precise drugs with fewer side effects.
Such systems are mainly used in the pre-clinical stage to select the most promising drug compounds. They simulate interactions between the drug and human cells to predict the expected response. Moreover, AI can analyze a patient’s genetic data to determine the most suitable medication, opening the door to what is known as precision medicine or personalized therapy. This is a promising field that is transforming the traditional way treatments are prescribed.
Although this technology is still in its early stages in some countries, its outcomes are highly promising. Drugs have already been discovered using AI in fields such as cancer and multiple sclerosis. Over time, drugs developed with this approach are expected to become more common, allowing treatments to be tailored to each patient’s unique characteristics. This will improve recovery rates and reduce medication errors.

Al-Mustaqbal University is the first one university in Iraq.
