The Department of Archaeology at the College of Arts and Humanities – Al-Mustaqbal University hosted Swedish archaeologist Professor Olof Pedersén in a scientific workshop titled:
“Babylon: The Ishtar Gate and the Tower – What We Know, Reconstructions, Speculations, and Forgeries.”
This event comes as part of the department’s efforts to promote awareness of ancient Iraqi civilization and to strengthen international academic cooperation.
The workshop was held under the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, and in the presence of the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Hussein Waheed, along with a number of faculty members, students, and individuals interested in archaeological studies.
The workshop opened with a speech delivered on behalf of the university presidency by Prof. Dr. Muzafar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, Director of Scientific and Academic Supervision, who emphasized the importance of protecting archaeological heritage as a fundamental component of Iraq’s civilizational identity. He highlighted the need for documentation and for strengthening cooperation with both local and international institutions.
Professor Pedersén presented a scholarly lecture discussing the historical development of the archaeological site of Babylon, reviewing the findings of excavation missions over the past two centuries, with specific reference to the German expedition and the transformations the site has undergone throughout different eras. He also addressed reconstructions, speculations, and forgeries associated with the history of Babylon, underscoring the importance of critical analysis of archaeological sources in understanding Babylonian civilization.
Professor Pedersén is regarded as one of the most prominent researchers in the archaeology of Mesopotamia, with significant contributions to the study of Babylonian architecture and cuneiform texts. His workshop represents an important intellectual addition for the students and researchers of the Department of Archaeology at Al-Mustaqbal University.
