As part of the Third Al-Mustaqbal International Sustainability Week, the largest event dedicated to sustainability in Iraq, Al-Mustaqbal University hosted an insightful dialogue session titled “Technology as a Key to Sustainability”, under the generous support of Prof. Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of the University, and in alignment with the institution’s renewed vision toward a greener, innovation-driven future. The session was inaugurated by its chair, Prof. Dr. Mahdi Abdul-Kadhim, Dean of the College of Agricultural Technologies, who emphasized the role of hydroponic farming as a forward-thinking approach to achieving food security. He explained how this technique leverages smart tools such as remote sensors and solar energy systems to efficiently manage agricultural operations and promote sustainability. The dialogue focused on two key questions: How can we create a sustainable environment? What is the role of technology in sustainable agriculture? In this context, Engineer Ammar Abdul-Rasoul, Managing Director of “Qalat Al-Tara’ib” Company, presented a successful case study in sustainable agriculture. He shared how his farm operates entirely on solar energy, utilizing hydroponic and aquaponic systems, which has significantly improved productivity while minimizing environmental impact by integrating fish farming and nutrient recycling. The second segment of the session was dedicated to plant tissue culture, featuring: Prof. Dr. Majid Kadhim Abbas – Head of the Medicinal Plants Department Prof. Dr. Tahani Jawad Mohammed Ali – College of Agriculture, Al-Qasim Green University The speakers explored the concept and practical applications of plant tissue culture, particularly its role in disease-free plant production, precise propagation, and synthetic seed technology. They also highlighted the production of secondary metabolites for pharmaceutical and medical use, and the relevance of this technique in various scientific and applied fields. The session concluded with an inspiring slogan: “We plant today... to harvest a greener, sustainable future tomorrow.” Al-Mustaqbal University — the leading private university in Iraq.
