In light of recent developments on the international stage, and amid the mounting challenges facing the sustainable development framework, we must examine a central issue that has become a source of concern for both academic and political circles, namely: Are international organizations still capable of fulfilling their commitments to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015? The reality revealed by international data and indicators gives cause for serious concern. As we approach the midpoint of the 2030 deadline, it is clear that most global goals are progressing slowly; indeed, some indicators show a marked decline rather than the hoped-for progress. This was confirmed by the UN Secretary-General’s report, which explicitly called for a “rescue plan for humanity and the planet”—a phrase that speaks volumes about the depth and entrenched nature of the crisis. What strikes me about this issue is that the problem lies not only in technical shortcomings or a scarcity of resources, but extends to the nature of institutional adoption of these goals by international organizations, as it is clear that many of them still treat the Sustainable Development Goals in a symbolic manner, without actually integrating them into their daily operational policies and programs. I believe that a genuine transition toward sustainability requires, first, moving beyond the logic of political declarations to the realm of binding legal mechanisms, and second, developing more rigorous monitoring and evaluation tools that reinforce the principle of accountability at both the national and international levels. I also emphasize the need for closer and more effective coordination between local, national, and international levels in implementing the 2030 Agenda, as the absence of such coordination threatens a collective failure whose consequences will not be limited.
