In today’s rapidly evolving digital world, cities are no longer just residential spaces, but dynamic environments driven by technology and innovation. The concept of Smart Urban Design has emerged as a leading trend in modern architecture and planning, where Artificial Intelligence meets urban reality to create more sustainable, innovative, and human-friendly cities.

Smart urban design integrates advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Big Data within urban infrastructures. Its main goals are to enhance quality of life, optimize resources, and protect the environment. These applications include smart transportation systems, adaptive lighting, intelligent energy and water management, public internet networks, smart green spaces, and sustainable buildings.

This approach plays a vital role in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11): "Sustainable Cities and Communities", as it helps to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities capable of addressing climate change challenges, population growth, and natural resource pressures.

Moreover, smart urban design empowers citizens by enabling digital participation and direct interaction with city services, fostering a stronger connection between people and their environment.

Ultimately, the future of cities goes beyond technology; it lies in how technology is utilized to serve humanity and promote sustainable urban living. Smart urban design becomes the true bridge between innovation and sustainability — between digital transformation and human well-being.

Al-Mustaqbal University the first university of Iraq .
