In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), the lecturer Asst. Instructor Safa Amer Khalil delivered a scientific seminar entitled:
“The Use of Fungi in Food and Pharmaceutical Industries and the Impact of Certain Species in Causing Diseases in Children.”
The seminar was attended by a number of faculty members and students from the department.
The presentation highlighted the importance of fungi as microorganisms with wide-ranging applications in various industrial fields. Fungi are used in the production of many food products such as bread, cheese, and fermented beverages, in addition to their vital role in manufacturing essential medications, including antibiotics, enzymes, and pharmaceutical compounds.
The lecturer also addressed the potential risks associated with certain fungal species, noting that some of them may pose health hazards—particularly to children—through exposure in household environments or through contaminated food. She emphasized the necessity of adhering to food safety and environmental standards to minimize these risks.
The seminar concluded with an engaging discussion session, during which participants raised several scientific questions and comments that enriched the topic and contributed to broadening the attendees’ understanding.
This activity reflects the department’s commitment to enhancing scientific awareness, updating students’ knowledge, and linking academic learning with modern applications in microbiology and biotechnological industries.
