As part of a series of scientific activities aimed at promoting safe laboratory culture and raising awareness about the risks associated with handling chemicals, a specialized scientific workshop titled "The Impact of Chemicals in Laboratories: Between Benefit and Risk" was held this morning.
The workshop was organized and conducted by:
· Dr. Asil Amer Hadi
· Dr. Karar Majid Obeid
The workshop addressed several key themes, most notably:
1. Classification of Chemical Hazards: An explanation of the different types of hazardous chemicals (corrosive, toxic, flammable, explosive, oxidizing) and how to read international identification labels (GHS).
2. Exposure Mechanisms and Health Effects: Discussion of the pathways through which chemicals enter the body (inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion) and the acute and chronic health effects resulting from unsafe exposure, supported by practical examples.
3. Risk Management and Prevention: This theme focused on risk control strategies, including:
· The importance of proper ventilation (chemical fume hoods).
· The use of appropriate personal protective equipment (masks, gloves, goggles, lab coats).
· Methods for correct storage and the segregation of incompatible materials.
· Procedures for handling spills and emergency incidents.
4. Chemical Waste Management: The importance of the safe and proper disposal of chemical waste according to specific protocols to protect the environment and prevent pollution was highlighted.
In his address, Dr. Asil Amer Hadi emphasized that "safety in laboratories is not merely about regulations posted on walls; it is a work culture and daily conduct that must be embraced by everyone entering the laboratory, to protect themselves, their colleagues, and their surroundings."
The workshop witnessed significant interaction from attendees, who participated with comments and questions that enriched the discussion. It also included a practical, applied segment on inspecting safety equipment and initial response to simulated incidents.
