Al-Mstaqbal University President Participates in UNESCO’s Digital Learning Week in Paris

Professor Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of Al-Mstaqbal University, took part in the Digital Learning Week organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, held from 2–5 September 2025 under the theme “AI and the Future of Education: Direction, Disruption, Dilemmas.” This high-level international event brought together ministers of education, policymakers, and experts from across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The opening session featured keynote addresses by Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education; Tomas Lamanauskas, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union; and Thomas Davin, Director of UNICEF’s Office of Innovation. The discussions during the inaugural session focused on navigating the complex landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, exploring both opportunities and challenges, and presenting global perspectives on leveraging technology to ensure inclusive and future-ready learning. Over the course of four days, the program included panel discussions and scientific workshops led by international experts and pioneers in education and AI. These sessions examined how AI is reshaping the future of learning, while showcasing innovative initiatives and practices that are setting global benchmarks in this domain. Participants emphasized the importance of approaching technological transformation responsibly, ensuring that it benefits learners, promotes equity, and sustains quality education, while also addressing the psychological, social, and ethical dimensions arising from these rapid changes. In his closing recommendations, Sobhi Al-Tawil, Director of the Future of Learning and Innovation Division at UNESCO, underlined that the integration of AI in education is radically transforming not only what students learn but also how they think, feel, and interact in technology-mediated environments. While AI offers revolutionary opportunities, it also places a profound social and ethical responsibility on education systems and policymakers to ensure that these transformations enhance equality and humanity, rather than diminish core learning values. Speaking to the media, Professor Hassan Shaker Majdi highlighted that Al-Mstaqbal University’s participation in this global platform reflects its vision and strategic commitment to innovation and excellence at the heart of its academic and research mission. He emphasized that such engagements provide a valuable opportunity to keep pace with the latest international research and experiences in AI-powered education, and to develop innovative strategies that ensure the sustainability and success of education systems in the digital era. Al-Mstaqbal University has distinguished itself through pioneering initiatives in AI and digital education. These include the implementation of advanced IT systems for student and human resource management; the establishment of the Future Center for AI Applications—the first of its kind in Iraq; and its recognition by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research as the national AI liaison in Arab scientific councils. The university also launched the AI Incubator, which has introduced a wide range of robotics initiatives, specialized educational programs, and international student participation in prestigious competitions such as Next Generation in Istanbul and UNIMED in Italy. Moreover, the university has developed specialized departments in Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity within the College of Science, aligning with the Ministry’s forward-looking strategy to establish the College of Excellence, offering both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in AI, and to expand AI faculties across Iraqi universities. Through these achievements and its active global presence, Al-Mstaqbal University continues to embody Iraq’s ambition to advance digital transformation in higher education and contribute to shaping the future of learning worldwide. Al-Mstaqbal University looks forward to achieving further success and excellence as it continues to engage in major global academic events.
